Dog Days of Summer

So I haven’t been updating as much lately. Hoping that will change in the upcoming weeks. I’ve hit a groove with my reading which is good, I just hate that it’s affecting my productivity in other areas. I’ve got Side B stuff to take care of (as well as Literary Dilettantes stuff) this month. But on Monday there should be an In My Mailbox post. And hopefully some reviews. I also started some Books That Made Me posts a while back (American Psycho and The Bitch Posse) and I’d like to get those up later this month if possible. And I should have an interview for you guys this month (my first! with one of my favorite authors! :D) I think I may also want to give away some more of my books (especially my short story collections) so keep an eye out for that possibility, if not soon then later in the year (oo maybe around Christmas time *starts pondering*).

I have read 51 books. I just need 9 more to reach my goal of 60. I can taste the finish line… and I’m already contemplating my Fall/Winter Reading List.

Fear of Flying

No, not the Erica Jong novel though trust me I am tempted to go to the library and borrow a copy to take with me on the plane as some kind of ironic joke about my intense fear of death flying. You there, in the back, with your finger hovering over the comment link ready to inform me that this book has nothing to do with flying, I am well aware, thank you very much.

Despite having had weeks to think about this, I don’t know what book(s) I’m going to bring with me on my trip. I’ve decided I’m not bringing the books I’m currently reading. I was supposed to have the two fiction titles read by now but of course I failed. Instead here are the books I’m considering:

If I bring the Laura Lippman I definitely have to bring something else as well. Though I don’t think I’ll be spending a ton of time reading, that book is entirely too short to last past the flight over there. Also, I swear despite what it looks like, I did not intentionally set out to just include books by women (not that I mind in the least). So, anyone have any suggestions? You can also see my list of unread books if you want to recommend something else. I need something that will distract me from the fact that I’m hurtling through the sky in some magical transportation vehicle that through the laws of physics manages not to randomly (usually) drop out of the sky… soooo yeah. HALP! I know there’s a poll but if you could leave a comment as to why you chose the book that you did, that would be much appreciated.

Anyway, I’ve got all my posts scheduled through Monday, including another one scheduled for today (this one was totally spur of the moment though I promise). I’m bringing my laptop to watch movies and episodes of The Simpsons, but I’ll probably go online because who can resist the call of the internet when wireless is available?

Until next time,

Requisite BEA Post: Introductions and the Like

So a crazy thing happened last week: I decided I wanted to go to BEA, otherwise known as Book Expo America.

I keep waiting for that email to arrive — you know, the one telling me that my application to BEA has been denied. I was reluctant to purchase business cards, fearing my app would be denied just as I had ordered them. Yes, yes I am paranoid! I’ve never done this before. It doesn’t feel quite real.

Alright so I’m putting my irrational fears behind me. I’ve been checking out people’s blogs for information and tips. So far I’ve really loved Bites’ BEA Tips, which pretty much convinced me I could (and should!) do this. Today I discovered Miss Remmer’s Review whose BEA vlogs have also been helpful. One of her recommendations was to tell people you’re going via a blog post; don’t just assume people know you’re going. That seems fair. Plus it gives me the chance to explain a few things.

My name is Nicole. This is my personal book blog, where I post reviews and other literary commentary. I also run The Literary Dilettantes, where I and 9 other awesome people post humorous/semi-humorous literary columns, features, lists, polls, etc. Now, although I am posting my introduction here, I am actually registered for BEA under The Literary Dilettantes. I’m like BATMAN: Literary Dilettante by day, Book Lush by night…or something.

I wavered back and forth over the decision, ultimately deciding that that blog is a bit more well known than this one and I already know some people going to BEA through the twitter handle associated with The Literary Dilettantes (@littydillies), making it easier for me to communicate with them. In fact, I have no twitter handle specifically associated with this blog. So in short, my badge is going to be all like

Now where was I? Ah, yes, introducing myself! I live in NYC. I used to be a Barnes and Noble worker bee, but my store closed a few months ago, so I’m not anymore! I’m currently in between jobs, which is a euphemism for WILL WORK FOR FOOD BOOKS. Speaking of, I mostly read fiction, essays / creative nonfiction, women’s / feminist studies, memoirs (I tend to gravitate toward ones about psychological disorders. It’s the psych major in me I suppose), and mysteries. Sometimes I read YA. I used to read romance, but I don’t anymore. My favorite authors include Edith Wharton, Vladimir Nabokov, J.D. Salinger, Donna Tartt, Martin Amis, Ian McEwan, Haruki Murakami, and Talitha Stevenson. As far as I can tell, these authors really have nothing in common, except that Amis and McEwan are/were friends and Nabokov is one of Amis’ greatest influences. But really, this is a pretty random mix of authors that I call favorites. Check out this 30 Day Book Meme for a funtastic way to learn more about my reading habits… Anything else you want to know about me, feel free to ask in the comments (whether or not you’re going to BEA)!

Last but not least, for all the people out there who are allegedly dying to see what I look like:

I seriously contemplated posting the picture of myself wearing a thong on my head, but I refrained dear reader. I refrained.

My favorite articles of 2010, some I’ve linked here before and some I haven’t. Hopefully I didn’t forget any, but if I did, I’ll add them later.
