In My Mailbox, the Brooklyn Book Festival Edition

Really proud of myself for not going completely hog wild at the Brooklyn Book Festival this year. After walking around a couple of times, I decided on the purchase stops I wanted to make and stuck with them. I only got 5 books and 2 literary journals.

The Feminist Press at CUNY was having a Buy 2 Get 1 Free sale so I decided to jump on the opportunity to finally check out some of their books. I realize though I would love to work for a company like them, I haven’t actually read any of their titles! So I figured this was the perfect opportunity to rectify that and get to know their work better.

Next up, Bank Street Books. I’ve never been to this bookstore because it’s a children’s bookstore, but when I saw that Libba Bray was going to be signing at their booth, I bought a copy of Beauty Queens (had realized on the train I’d forgotten to bring A Great and Terrible Beauty *womp wimp*) as well as this book I heard about at BEA then forgot about until Britt, our Design Director at Side B Magazine, recommended it this week for the newsletter.

And finally I got the latest issue of Slice Magazine and the very first issue of Tin House Magazine :’)

In non-Brooklyn-Book-Festival-related acquisitions, I actually got The Night Circus and We Others at the Strand last week, using the gift card I got from Lee for my birthday this past January.

Oftentimes I forget to mention what blog this In My Mailbox meme comes from. I don’t mean to it’s just that I used to do a Weekly Purchases/Acquisitions meme without any real knowledge that there was a meme for that, and so I don’t think about it. Hopefully I’m not offended the Blog Gods. Anyway In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by the Story Siren. Two of this week’s books come from Borders ~END OF DAYS~ sale. The other I’ve been wanting for a while but doesn’t seem to be in stores, nor did it have picture on Amazon at the time I ordered it (it’s finally up now)… I ended up ordering it from Amazon. Please no one throw stones at me.

I bought an obscene number of books last week. Went a little bonkers really, first at Borders because they were offering an additional 10% off on top of the 30-50% books if you bought 6 or more items, 15% if you bought 8 or more. Fiction was 40% off, so with the extra 15%, not too shabby, actually kind of worthwhile. Then on Wednesday I went to McNally Jackson to purchase Girl Crush Zine and left with several books as well. And then I made one more Borders trip and got yet another book (though I managed to put two down on my way to purchase so there was a bit of self control). Without further ado, my purchases, no images this time because there are really too many xD

DAY 1 (Borders near Penn Station)
Female Chauvinist Pigs. Hell yeah, 50% off baby! I’ve had a kind of crush on Ariel Levy ever since I saw her speak during one of those Erica Jong/Sugar in my Bowl discussions, so I decided to just get it. I’d Know You Anywhere. Laura Lippman stand-alone. ‘Nuff said. A Kind of Intimacy. Been kind of eyeing this one for a long time. It’s Europa, I trust them. Pretty Monsters. It was there. Rules of Civility. There’s been a fair bit of talk about this book lately and it sounds sort of like something I’d like, so I went for it. So Much Pretty. There was a bit of talk about this one when it first came out. Another literary mystery, I’m game. These Things Hidden. I’ve read another one of her mysteries. It was good, so I figure why not? The Wrong Mother. I didn’t really like Little Face but Sophie Hannah redeemed herself with The Truth Teller’s Lie so I went for it. Hopefully I’ll get around to reviewing the latter btw.

DAY 2 (Borders @ the Shops at Columbus Circle)
Cum Laude. I can has trashy college novel in the vein of trashy teen prep novels? Elliot Allagash. I’ve seen this book before, seemed like a quick, easy read. Already finished with it, review coming this Friday. Faithful Place. This is the book I was actually aiming to buy on Monday. Much to my dismay the Penn Station Borders did not seem to have it (after having boatloads). Thankfully the Columbus Circle one had a few copies left. The Lost Books of the Odyssey. Have I mentioned I’m a big fan of Homer’s two epics?

DAY 3 (McNally Jackson)
The Age of Innocence. I already own this novel as it’s one of my favorites, but I finally got my hands on the Scribner edition that I’ve wanted for a long time now. 13 Ways of Looking at the Novel. It was there. Rebel Angels and The Sweet Far Thing of the first volume of the Gemma Doyle Trilogy will be posted this week, but let’s just say I liked it enough to get the next two installments. The Vespertine. This seemed a bit like the aforementioned Gemma Doyle Trilogy so I decided to give it a shot. Hope it’s just as good.

DAY 4 (Borders near Penn Station)
Dangerous Angels: The Weetzie Bat Books. I actually considered getting this on Day 1, but passed. Once I saw it again on Day 4 I thought I might as well go for it while it’s still there. It was 40% off by this point.

For those who are curious, I spent the most money on Day 3, at McNally Jackson’s. But I also purchased 2 magazines that day.

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren in which bloggers share the books they received, bought, checked out, etc. that week. This week, I went to the Strand with my birthday gift cards (that I still haven’t finished spending) and purchased two books: Story of My Life by Jay McInerney, which I read in a day, but I’m not sure I’ll be reviewing and Flappers and Philosophers by F. Scott Fitzgerald. As previously mentioned, I also stopped by Borders this week to see what the pickings were and ended up buying only one book: A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray, which I’ve already finished and will be reviewing, hopefully later this week.

A bit late, but here we go. In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren in which bloggers share the books they received, bought, checked out, etc. that week. This week’s In My Mailbox is actually my mom’s mailbox. After seeing the last Harry Potter film, my mom decided she wanted to get the box set (she was hoping for the trunk I had described but then we realized those were the hardcovers). She has the hardcovers already but a few have been misplaced. We decided that she would re-read the entire series and I would read them for the first time. Together! :) I might do some posts on my impressions and thoughts on the books but don’t expect full reviews or anything.
