30 Day Book Meme: Days 26 and 27

Day 26 – A book that changed your opinion about something
I’ve been trying to figure out an answer to this question since yesterday but I seem to be coming up empty. Permission to skip the question until further notice.

Day 27 – The most surprising plot twist or ending
I would say Atonement but when the book was recommended to me, my co-worker told me he flung the book across the room when he got to the end (for the record, he thinks it’s brilliant but he was still pissed at first). He didn’t give away the ending but somehow I managed to guess anyway. Not sure I would have if I hadn’t been somewhat tipped off. I’ll just go ahead and say Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk since I was genuinely surprised by quite a few things in that book.

30 Day Book Meme: Day 18

Day 18 – A book that disappointed you

After reading both Invisible Monsters, which I liked a lot, and Fight Club, which I disliked, I thought Chuck deserved another chance. So I decided to read Lullaby which started off extremely well, with a fantastic premise. But somewhere along the way, the book just kind of veered off into something else, and in the end I was sorely disappointed, not only because the book itself was disappointing but because it seemed a lot like ‘more of the same’ from Chuck. And so I decided then, that he and I were done professionally.

30 Day Book Meme: Day 8

Day 08 – Most overrated book
I rarely think of books as overrated, generally feeling that just because I didn’t like something doesn’t mean it’s overrated. It’s just not my cup of tea. But in the fun of the meme I will answer the first book that came to mind, Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk

So, here’s the deal. I read Invisible Monsters at a friend’s recommendation (HI ASHLEY!), and I really loved it. It was my first Palahniuk and I thought it was deliciously bizarre but wonderful. Then I read Fight Club…and within the first few pages, I guessed what the twist was going to be. Then I tried to convince myself that said twist could not possibly happen because it simply didn’t make any sense. Well, I was right. I wasn’t at all surprised by the end, and I was more than a little pissed off by the end. I think maybe if I hadn’t read Invisible Monsters first, I might have been surprised, as I would have been unfamiliar with Palahniuk’s M.O. I’ll never really know, but I do know I’m not a fan and when people ask me which Palahniuk book to start with, I generally say Invisible Monsters.
